Ammeters are devices designed to measure the current values of systems in facilities.
What is an Ammeter?
An ammeter is a tool used in electrical circuits. The simplest definition of "What is an ammeter?" is a "meter used to measure current." Within electrical circuits, there are moving electrons. The movement of these electrons creates a current on the cable. This current is called electrical current. An ammeter is used to measure this current in amperes ($A$). An ideal ammeter has zero internal resistance. However, ammeters used in practice always have a very small internal resistance. The measurement range varies depending on the value of this resistance. Its symbolic representation is "A". In electrical systems, wherever the letter "A" (as a capital letter) is seen, it is easily understood that amperes are being discussed and the ammeter is represented.
How is an Ammeter Connected to a Circuit?
To measure current with an ammeter, the device must be connected to the circuit. How is an ammeter connected and how is the measurement made? Measuring the current created by moving electrons on a circuit depends on all electrons passing through the machine that will perform the measurement. For this reason, the ammeter is connected in series to the circuit. A power loss occurs due to the measured current and the internal resistances of the ammeter; however, measurements are always made by taking this power loss into account. Since the resistance of the ammeter circuit is low, a small voltage drop also occurs in the circuit.
The resistance of an ammeter is kept low for two reasons:
All of the measured current passes through the ammeter.
Only small drops in voltage occur due to the ammeter.
